Course description

An exploration of current safeguarding issues relating to BME pupils and those with EAL, including cultural issues and language barriers.

Training objectives

Delegates will learn to:

  • understand the issues faced by BME pupils and those with EAL highlighted in recent serious case reviews;

  • use EMAS' bilingual staff to support safeguarding in school.


Learning outcomes

School staff will feel confident in being 'professionally inquisitive' when safeguarding pupils from other language backgrounds, cultures, religions and ethnicities.  They will understand the risks for certain groups of children and know how to use EMAS' bilingual staff to support with safeguarding concerns.

Target Audience:  Designated Safeguarding Leads, pastoral support staff, Inclusion Managers and SENCOs, EMA Co-ordinators


  • Free to all Portsmouth schools with 'general support' or 'adviser' packages
  • Membership-only schools £100
  • £50 non-attendance fee charged to ALL schools who do not give 24 hours' notice
