Course description

A course to support all staff in schools to safeguard their pupils who are BME and/or EAL

Training objectives

We will be looking at:
• Definitions and case reviews
• Does being BME or having EAL mean that you are at increased risk?
• When to be worried
• Safeguarding in schools: Keeping Children Safe in Education
• Drawing out learning from Serious Case Reviews in more detail - risk factors for the following:
- Culture and faith; to include female genital mutilation (FGM), child sexual exploitation (CSE), trafficking and modern slavery, forced marriage, honour-based violence, child abuse linked to faith or belief, disability and Roma culture
- English as an additional language
- New arrivals/ refugees and asylum-seekers
• How EMAS can help schools:
- Use of the Bilingual Learning Assistants (BLAs)
- Getting a BLA in an emergency

Learning outcomes

School staff will have a clear understanding of the issues pertaining most especially to BME pupils and those with EAL and the support available from EMAS for these issues
